Virtual Pin

(Cost-effective) concept for testing densely populated PCBs with limited contactability (not all nets have test points), which contain at least one boundary scan-capable module. The final test run usually consists of an optimally matched combination of in-circuit, functional and boundary scan tests.

The same function that sends and receives data to the boundary scan cell also stimulates the functionality of the non-boundary scan module. A "virtual pin" is placed between a Boundary Scan component and a Non-Boundary Scan component directly surrounding it. The corresponding input on the non-boundary-scan component can thus be controlled and its output signals can be detected.

The internal Digitaltest system capabilities are used, and the same standardized diagnostic protocol as for an in-circuit test (ICT) is also used to check the boundary-scan-capable component, which also increases test coverage.
